An Incredible Journey

It has been an incredible journey—working as a broadcast meteorologist in Boston since 1992. I am honored to have learned from the best like Harvey Leonard and Barry Burbank and to have shared important science stories with viewers. I have learned so much, experienced more severe weather than I could have ever hoped for, and grown professionally and personally. Thank you for helping to support my work in the science. It truly has been a gift.

Well, after almost two decades on New England television, today will be my last on the local airwaves for now. Having literally grown up on local television, this transition is both exciting and sad. I look forward to spending more time with my husband and little gal Nalina and not having to blow dry my hair straight all the time! But I will miss the excitement and intensity of covering local weather and the incredible team of meteorologists and professionals I have worked with over the years. I will miss most my executive weather producer Terry Eliasen. We started together back in the 1996 when he was one of my meteorology students at UMASS Lowell. In the fall of 1997, he started as an intern at WHDH. Harvey Leonard was so impressed with him, he secured him a part time job by the end of the year. When I finally jumped to WBZ in 2001, Harvey allowed me to hire Terry away once Harvey was squared away at WCVB. Terry came to WBZ Executive Weather Producer–and he’s been MY boss ever since! And outstanding meteorologist and human being, we have worked together every day for years. He has been nothing but stellar.

    Mish,

I began my weather spotter career with you, Harvey and Todd in 2000
and have enjoyed vicariously all your weather adventures, especially those
related to hurricanes! Thanks for encouraging me to take the weather spotter course way back when at the MOS. Enjoy being mom full time. I will miss your on-air reports and feel certain there is more to come..sometime..somewhere!

    Best wishes, Cathryn

Mish, I have never written to anyone like this before but I need to tell you that you will be truly, truly missed. You should have been made the director a few years back and it was a very bad decision on the part of WBZ.
You made me confident in your forecasts and always with the brightest and sincerest of smiles. I knew you loved what you did and that you gave it all you had…
Congratulations on your amazing achievements and enjoy your life! It is well deserved. Thank you!

    Mish,
we will all miss you! I have enjoyed watching you over the years. I am a weather buff in my little network of friends. They are always asking me what is the weather going to be today Deb? lol I enjoyed watching you during your pregnancy, too. I am glad you have decided to focus your time on your daughter. I did the exact same when my kids were 1 and 6. I have just re-entered the full time job force and my children are now 15 and 10…perfect timing! We will miss your beautiful cheek bone structure….they are awesome! Good luck. Will look for you again down the road when you are ready to return!!

  6. Linda Pegnato says:

    Dear Mish,
Only the best works with the best. We will certainly miss watching you covering the weather. I can certainly understand your desire to be a mom and enjoy these years with your daughter. We saw you briefly at the Armenian dinner dance last year and I asked you, what the weather was for the next day. You said, “Well, the sky is clear tonight and tomorrow should be a great day”. And you were right, of course. It’s been a pleasure to watch you on WBZ, I’m sure they’ll miss having your input and professionalism and wish you and your family the best.

Please come back to TV after taking some time off! Just do a weekend gig, that can’t be too bad…

    Dear Mish…

I first saw you broadcasting the weather when I lived in GA. How pleasantly surprised I was to see you when I moved to the Boston area! My daughter used to copy you and present her version of the forecast at the wonderful age of 3! You are the only woman meteorologist, she has seen on a regular basis, as she has grown into an amazing young woman. You have been, and are, great role model for young girls/woman! Now your daughter will get to have you ‘full-time’…not that she doesn’t already! I have 4 children and also work. I know how hard it is feeling pulled and stretched in too many different directions; burning the candle at both ends…I hardly ever felt I was doing my best in any area; as mom, at work, my household, etc…

Now that I’m not working as much, I feel so much more relaxed and can actually enjoy the moment instead of thinking of work when I was at home and vice versa. It also gave me the opportunity to realize I was doing a whole lot better than I thought I was. Congratulations on your well deserved “sabbatical”! By the way, my mom loves you too and asked me to tell you how happy she is for you & that she will miss you… I’m sure that goes for many of your longtime viewer-friends! :D

    Sincerely,
    Lizzy

Mish, What a classy farewell tonight. You recognized all the people that you’ve worked with and that have been part of your weather team. How thoughtful!

We’ll miss the grace, elegance and wisdom that you continuously displayed on your weather forecasts and weather specials. You never talked down to the viewers and we always learned something new from you. Your voice, your gestures, your wardrobe and your weather knowledge all helped make for a perfect package. Our family always looked forward to the weather forecasts when you on the air. We always felt badly when we saw you reporting midwinter during a snowstorm – Hope WBZ provided some warm clothing.

I applaud you for taking the time now to be with your family, especially during these formative years. Enjoy your time off. We’ll miss you. And we’ll keep an eye on the tube for your next weather special.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Mitch, I have enjoyed you over these many years. I know you will enjoy your time with your family. I hope that you will add to it. I am sure your little girl would enjoy a sibling. If this is not in your planned future. I wish you the best in your future endeavors. I look forward to your returning to the airwaves when you decide it is time. Best of luck. You have done us (females) proud.

I remember when you started at Channel 9 in Manchester. You have come along way, wish you the best with your family…

  13. John Fisher says:

Best of luck to you and your family Mish. I’ve enjoyed your reporting over the years and commend you on your decision to spend more time with your little “future” meteorologist:) I seem to remember that you live in New Hampshire – if you ever need a real estate agent here drop me a note and I’d be more than honored to provide you with some great advise in return for all the great ‘weather advice’ you’ve given everyone over the years.
Clear skies and many great days at the beach to you and yours,
    John

  14. Rhea says:

Wow, I hadn’t realized you were going off the air. Well, enjoy your family and your free time. I graduated from B.U. (1980) but attended Rutgers Univ. over the summers, where I took courses in climatology and meteorology. I love weather, the more dramatic the better. The best weather I’ve ever experienced was in upstate New York (a hail white-out), Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks (torrential, sudden tropical storm) and near Taos, New Mexico (saw lightning that came down from the sky and curled into a ball). Wait, that just gave me an idea for a blog post…

  15. Joan Tiso says:

Just a short note to say good-bye and good luck. As a mother of two grown children, I understand wanting to be at home to watch them grown. Children stay children for a short time. Most women in your position would rather the career than taking time off to be with their family. I guess I’m old school. Like you said, right now you’re still cool to her. Good luck and I know we’ll see you again on the airwaves again. Your fan, Joan Tiso shortjon@msn.com.

  16. Sharon says:

I have been watching you for many years and want to say you are a great meteorologist. I am very much into the weather myself. My honeymoon was spent on Nantucket during the “No Name” storm, my husband said I was in my glory, and I was. My old coworkers used to call me Mish because I am so into the weather. I wish you the best and hope you enjoy every minute with your little girl.

I look forward to your return someday.

    Mish,
All the best for this new chapter in your life.
We’ll all miss you on WBZ-TV, but now we have this website!
Enjoy the ‘time off’ and your family.

I met Mish in October of 2002, but did not know that she had also survived a tornado as a youngster. Would love to follow in your footseps and meet that “Worcester boy” in Oklahoma. Sincere best wishes on the road that lies ahead.

Mish, all the best in your future endeavors, but most of all enjoy the time spent with your family, it’s this time that passes so quickly. You have been one of our favorite weather reporters, with your beautiful smile and vibrant personality. We will miss you.

Sad to see you gone from BZ. But glad it was for the right reasons. Best of luck.

  22. Kim Martucci says:

    Mish,
A heartfelt THANK YOU for taking the time to contact ME, as a meteorology student at Cornell that week following the publication of our alumni magazine and expressing interest in how I was doing. You didn’t know me, but you took the time to extend a welcome, helping hand. You let me know that more women meteorologists were not only needed but welcome. I will never forget that. Even though you are entirely TOO YOUNG to be my mentor, you most certainly are.

I remain your biggest fan (and quite possibly tallest)!
    Much Love,
    Kim Martucci
